SIZE & LOCATION The greater economies of scale allow a big school to offer more courses and more majors, to have a bigger library and so on. With a smaller school, class sizes tend to be smaller and things like classroom participation and access to faculty tend to increase.
ACADEMIC (AND OTHER) OPPORTUNITIES More than half of students change their major before they graduate from college, so you might want to consider how easy it will be to switch. Beyond your major, you’ll want a school with a well-rounded curriculum as well as experiential programs like study abroad, internships, and independent research.
CAMPUS LIFE You’re choosing a school to spend four years at… you want to know that there is life beyond the classroom. Look for clubs, sport teams, and activities that interest you. Current students can tell you a lot about what goes on!
FACULTY What is the average class size? Do TA’s teach any of the classes? Are faculty available outside of class, and do they encourage students to participate in research opportunities?
COST The sticker price of an institution that you read in a college guide never tells the whole story. You’ll also want to look at the amount of financial aid a school awards and what merit-based scholarships might be available. Programs like IU’s fixed tuition can impact the total amount you pay over four years.
